The Huon Valley Concert Band is a local community group, consisting of two ensembles – the Concert Band and the Swing Band.
The aim of the organisation is to provide:
• a forum for musicians to regularly meet and play together,
• a quality community band to play at appropriate events in the Huon Valley and to represent the Huon Valley at events outside the area.
• opportunities for members of the Huon Valley community to receive basic music tuition (e.g.provide free instruments and tuition to beginners),
• opportunities for members of the community to further their musical experience (e.g. arrange for professional musicians to conduct workshops for Huon Valley Musicians).
The Concert Band plays music including marches, movie themes, classical and pop. The band, conducted by Musical Director Jane Harvey, is complemented by a number of music teacher members.
The Swing Band plays music from the 1930s and 40s by great big-band composers such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller. The band was formed over 10 years ago by trumpet player and band leader Malcolm Martin.
Rehearsals are held from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Huonville Community Church every Wednesday for the Concert Band. The Swing Band rehearsals are held at the Cygnet RSL Club. Contact Malcolm on 0459 041 762 for rehearsal times.
We are actively seeking new musicians to join our ensembles. Annual membership is $100 for adults and $50 for students.
The band also has a social element, with a regular supper gathering after rehearsal.
Without any commitment please feel free to attend a rehearsal to listen or better still bring your instrument and play.
