The rail trail utilizes rail formations constructed by the Huon Timber Company, 1904-1926, to service a sawmill situated at Whale Point, across the bay from Port Huon. Some have been cleared to preserve history & to provide a recreational opportunity for the public.
Five trails have been cleared: Kermandie River, South Creek, North Creek, Riawunna, & Crookes Creek – includes steam sawmill site.
The trails are all easy to follow & suitable for:
walking (with or without dogs)
Horse riding
Mountain bike riding
NO motorized vehicles allowed
Distance: 2-4km One Way
Suggested Time: 1 to 2 hours
Difficulty: Grade 2. Easy to moderate. Mixed terrain gently sloping. 2-3 metres rail formation width. Creek crossings replaced with tracks.
Facilities: None other than signage.
Getting There
From Geeveston town centre follow Arve Road 6.4 kms to Oigles Road (0.5 kms past Huon Field & Game Shooting Range). Turn left onto Oigles Road & follow for 4.7 kms to main access point. Oigles Road is a good, wide gravel road suitable for 2WD vehicles. (Look out for log trucks)
Other access points are also along Oigles Road, & sign posted.
Access is also available via Kermandie River Road, at southern boundary of Geeveston, to past Golf Club Road, & then on to Haulage Road.
Plan Ahead
Tasmania’s remote areas are beautiful however weather and track conditions can change suddenly. Mobile reception in many of these areas can be limited or non existent.
Be prepared for the walk or activity. Plan ahead, bring enough water, check the alerts, and make sure you are comfortable with the difficulty rating.
